Abstract

This study was done for the purpose of analyzing the relationship between social support and degree of stress, and mental health.
The subjects of this study were 105 adults in Seoul area. Data was collected from the 2nd to 25th October.
The research instruments used for the study were as follows.
Family support scale was developed by the researcher, helper¢¥s support scale developed by Nor beck, neighborhood - community scale developed by Andrew, instrumental expressive support scale developed by Dean & Lin, stressful life events scale developed by the researcher and mental health scale developed by Lin.
Data was analyzed by computer using Statistical Package for the Social Science program.
The results of the study were as follows.
1. The degree of social support ranged from the score of 70 to 153, showing mean of 114.50 and there was no significant differences between social support according to the demographic variables.
2. The degree of stress ranged from the score of 30 to 64, showing mean of 39.01. And there was significant differences between the degree of stress according to religion and occupation. (P < .05, P < .05) 3. The degree of mental health ranged from the score of 35 to 95, showing mean of 74.90 and there was significant differences between mental health according to socio-economic status.(p <.05).
4. There was correlation between social support and mental health. `.(r = .6054, p < .001)
5. There was correlation between degree of stress and mental health. (r = .2829, p < .01)
6. There was no correlation between social support and degree of stress.
7. The social support scale could predict more than twice as much of the mental health as stressful life event and explain 46% with stressful life events scale.
8. Social support contributed significantly and positively to mental health and stressful life event significantly and negatively, but interaction effects wasn¢¥t discovered.
